Once the install process starts, the whole thing took just under an hour for this MacBook Pro (2010). They did get a non apple user through the setup without any real problems. The instructions were adequate and seemed thorough. The only way left was a bootable installation disk which I bought from Amazon. Research uncovered a number of ways of reinstalling the OS but nearly all assume you have a working Mac. The repair utility will happily wipe your HDD clean but won't download a fresh OS because Apple appears to have removed el Capitan (and probably other old versions) from their store - effectively rendering the MacBook useless. I was trying to 'factory reset' my daughter's MacBook (running el Capitan) but things went horribly wrong.

so glad I did! I had long since - and foolishly - discarded my early Mac OS X DVD's, and tried many means of downloading and creating bootable MAC OS X USB's, but all required an older Mac system as a base from which to build such media.
but having read the reviews I was encouraged to give this a go. And was somewhat nervous about purchasing stated install media, given the plethora of 'bogus' options available stating they are installable. I had almost given up and resigned myself to using this as 'a Linux test system'. I had just about given up all hope of getting my aged MacBookPro (early 2008).
